Ten Mile Lake Association
Email Update for May 2019

Another beautiful spring awakening on the lake. Bird sightings have set records with orioles, scarlet tanagers, indigo buntings and all kinds of warblers. Not to mention, bears, baby foxes, and wolves.

May 2019 TMLA Board Meeting Notes

The Treasurer supplied a good end-of-year Budget Report and the 2019-20 Budget was approved. A donation was again made to the Hackensack 4th of July Celebration.

The Membership Coordinator reported that research was done to find that there are 597 parcels of properties on the lake & 567 paid memberships. Our memberships include over 1,200 individuals. Great participation!

The Conservation Committee continues to pursue properties that might help preserve our lake and environs. Working with the Northern Waters Land Trust and the Legacy Fund grant process, they are hoping to acquire the Kruse property in Lundstrom’s Bay. If acquired, it would transfer to Cass County for permanent conservation. Look for future updates on this project.

The Aquatic Invasive Species Committee reports that a new County Coordinator has been hired and our Public Access is now staffed. Remind guests to CLEAN, DRAIN and DRY their boats and other watercraft before bringing them to the lake!

The Communication & Technology Committee has had a busy winter. The new TMLA website is now up and the Anchor portal for Members is active. This is the time to review your personal information for the next directory. Remember – if you need help with the Anchor or just don’t want to go online, you can contact the Membership Coordinator as usual by phone at 218-429-1164 or through the US Mail at P O Box 412, Hackensack, MN 56452. The Spring Newsletter is posted on the website and should be in your mailbox or email by now. Our Editor, Sara Chaffee-Bates, would love a volunteer or two to help with this ongoing project. If interested, email her at newsletter@tenmilelake.org. Our Facebook page is coming in June, see Website News below.

Environment & Ecology reports that the latest annual report (2018) from RMB Environmental Labs shows we are in good shape. This report is available on the TMLA website in the Library. Well-water testing happens on July 8th to test for e-coli and nitrates. Testing for nitrates will become more important as we determine base levels around the lake. High levels of nitrates can be an outcome of agricultural practices in our region that threaten surface & groundwater-base levels taken now can be used for comparison in the future. Water level records are available on the TMLA website in the Library and 2019 testing will begin soon.

The Healthy Lakes Committee reminded folks to post their goals ASAP. These reports will be in the Library section of the website. The Leech Lake Comprehensive Watershed Management Plan will be available in July.

The History Committee finished digitizing our paper records for posterity. The website might soon have some of our oral histories, as well.

Website Subcommittee News

Ten Mile Lake Association website provides two calendars for members:

  • The "Public" calendar is accessed directly from the main TMLA website by scrolling over "Events" then clicking "TMLA Calendar of Events". This calendar provides times, dates and contact name for TMLA events such as board meetings, coffees, committee meetings, etc. However, this public calendar does not provide location addresses, phone numbers or e-mails for members. All members personal information is kept private and not available on this public site. This public calendar is available to anyone using the internet.
  • The Anchor provides a second calendar which is only accessible by TMLA members. To access this calendar members must log in to the Anchor from the TMLA website (scroll over "membership", click on "membership login", sign in and then click on "Events"). This private calendar provides personal information. The calendar in the Anchor shows the same events as the "Public" calendar but provides the host address and a map in addition to phone numbers and e-mails for the host or contact person. The calendar in the Anchor was created so that all personal information remains available only to TMLA members.

If you have questions about the calendars or you would like to add an event to the calendar, send an e-mail to: calendar@tenmilelake.org. And of course, the full calendar is printed in the newsletter as well.

The new Ten Mile Lake Association Facebook page will be completed in June. The Facebook page is a dedicated page for Ten Mile Lake Association (TMLA) members and will be monitored by the TMLA Association. This page can be a place to share community information, ask questions about Ten Mile Lake, local activities and events, start clubs, post lost and found items, and find local resources and recommendations. Once the Facebook page is live please review the TMLA Facebook protocols as your membership in the group implies your acceptance of these rules."

PLEASE NOTE: We are aware there are several Ten Mile Lake Facebook pages (i.e. sailing, fishing, etc.) already in existence. Our new TMLA Facebook page linked to the website is the official Association page. This page is for Association members only and posts on this Facebook page can only be seen by members. The other Facebook pages are not affiliated with the Ten Mile Lake Association and do not guarantee TMLA membership access only. Once this new page is up and functioning you may reach it through the link or address posted on the TMLA website.

Reports from other committees will be noted as their seasonal work gets underway.
